As the Abdication crisis rocks the country, Kit and Emma find themselves unwilling first-hand witnesses. With her brother James summoned abroad by his old employer, Polly feels alone and abandoned at Morland Place. A chance to sail on Queen Mary to New York confronts her with a long-lost love and a desperate dilemma. James travels to Russia with terrifying consequences; Basil is persuaded to volunteer in Spain.
Working for the Air Ministry on new fighter planes, Jack fears his children are not taking seriously enough the increasingly tense situation in Europe. The nation is divided over whether Fascism or Communism is the greater threat. As sovereign countries are invaded and refugees seek safety in Britain, the black clouds of war once more gather over a continent, and the Morlands must struggle to keep hold of all they have worked for, and find a way in the twilight of the world still to love, and to hope.
